Just got married to this beautiful woman who is the best person I know. NBD
Guys, I was serious. My granddad really commissioned an oil painting of his favorite pack mules.
After graduating from Emory University, top student and athlete Christopher McCandless abandoned his possessions, gave his entire $24,000 savings account to Oxfam and hitchhiked to Alaska to live in the wilderness.
This guys a joke.
I agree. Almost everybody that seems to idolize him and romanticize him strike me as armchair outdoorsmen (or women) who would themselves end up being the idiot romantic who dies because of their own stupidity rather than taking the time to prepare and develop survival skills before casting their soft selves into the maw of the wild. That is, if they ever got off their asses and stopped reblogging pictures of the forest on tumblr and actually went outside.
Look to Dick Proenneke and Dersu Uzala instead of this clown. Thousands of years of our ancestors, as well as many of our contemporaries have and do survive quite capably in the wild. Why romanticize a person who couldn’t?
Lets not forget the monstrous self-absorption that led him into the woods in the first place. Chris’ complete inability to consider the feelings of others left a trail of broken hearted people who cared about him. Stop mythologizing this guy. He’s a cautionary tale about taking yourself too seriously.
God made Cormac McCarthy so we wouldn’t have to read Louis L’amour anymore. (I’m about to watch my follower count plummet I guess.)
